More important than structured vs. unstructured play is to ask whether the activity holds your dog's full attention. When your dog is fully engaged in an activity, she is arranging and absorbing meaning. She's finding reward in the act of understanding. She's enjoying figuring it out, whether the "it"—the activity— is structured or unstructured.
Structured play has a set of rules with specific objectives. Most games fall under the category of structured play: card games, board games and classic outdoor games like fetch and tug and more complex games like agility, flyball and dock diving are all structured activities. Getting the treats out of a puzzle toy is a structured activity. So is following directions to sit, down or come. Generally speaking, when your dog is engaging in structured play, she is seeking the most efficient way to achieve pre-existing objectives.

Who can fathom the mind of a puppy? Squirrels drive them crazy, garbage is their favorite snack and immediately after chewing your one-of-a-kind, handmade leather jacket into confetti, they can give you a look of such innocent love and adoration that you forget all about it. When you bring a puppy home, she becomes part of your family; you need to be able to trust her with your home, your belongings and even your children. Some trainers say we should give our dogs jobs in order to solve their behavior issues, and in reality, that is pretty much exactly what you should do. However, putting on a backpack and adding a jar of pickles for weight is not a "job"; it does not challenge the dog in anyway except physically.

Taking A Walk
Four legged animals move in natural rhythm, without it they would trip over their own feet more often than not. Some dogs are designed to have very efficient movement that serves the long distance purpose with minimum loss of energy, and others can go for shorter distances with a more stylised action. Some dogs have one at the front end and the other at the back! But hey, each is still in balance.

Obedience Basics
Our obedience program has 5 levels. The first 3 levels are basic to advanced obedience. This is necessary for all dogs. This booket covers Levels 1, 2 and 3.
These 3 levels correspond to the AKC Canine Good Citizen program and the APDT Canine Life and Social Skills Program. Both sets of exams can be passed doing the exercises in this book.
Training the Retrieve
Retrieve is used in competitive sports and in daily life. It is useful as well as a fun and interactive game for you and your dog.
The retrieve behavior is part of your dog’s natural instincts as part of the hunt. Bringing food back to the puppies was a necessary part of canid life. I try to include as many of these behaviors as possible, structured to fit in our human world, so that the dog not only loves the activity, but needs it.
